One board foot = 144 cubic inches. Enter actual (dressed) dimensions — a “1×6” usually measures 0.75 × 5.5 in. Buy 10–15% extra for defects and offcuts.

Walk up to the hardwood rack at a lumber yard and you will not see prices per board or per foot of length. You will see a price per board foot — and if you do not know how to count them, you are at the mercy of whatever the person behind the counter scribbles down. The board foot calculator above does that counting for you: type in a board's dimensions and quantity, and it returns the total volume of lumber and, if you enter a price, what the stack will cost.

It is one of the most useful numbers a woodworker can carry in their head, and the maths behind it is genuinely simple. This guide explains what a board foot is, how the formula works, the dimension traps that catch beginners, and how to turn the number into an accurate shopping list.

What is a board foot?

A board foot is a unit of volume, not length or area. One board foot equals 144 cubic inches of wood — picture a piece one foot long, one foot wide and one inch thick. That is the reference block. Any other combination of dimensions that adds up to 144 cubic inches is also exactly one board foot.

Because it captures the actual amount of wood, the board foot is how rough hardwood — walnut, oak, maple, cherry — is priced and sold the world over. Learn to count board feet and you can price a project, compare yards, and check a quote on the spot.

The board foot formula

Here is the entire calculation, the one running inside the tool above:

The calculator lets you enter length either way — flip the unit toggle between ft and in and it uses the right divisor automatically. Then it multiplies by your quantity to total up a whole stack of identical boards.

A worked example, using the wood every project seems to start with. A standard 2×4 that is eight feet long actually measures 1.5 inches thick by 3.5 inches wide (more on that shortly). So:

Board feet = (1.5 × 3.5 × 8) ÷ 12 = 3.5 board feet

One 1×6 hardwood board, also eight feet long, where the "1 inch" really is a full inch of rough stock:

Board feet = (1 × 6 × 8) ÷ 12 = 4 board feet

The trap: nominal vs actual dimensions

This is where almost everyone goes wrong, and it is worth slowing down for. The size printed on softwood lumber is the nominal size — the rough size before the mill planed it smooth. The actual (dressed) size you take home is smaller. A "2×4" is not two inches by four inches; it is 1.5 by 3.5.

So which numbers do you feed the calculator? It depends on why you are counting:

  • To know how much wood you are actually getting (and to price softwood fairly), use the actual dimensions. That is the real volume in your hands.
  • To match a yard's softwood pricing, be aware many yards quote softwood off the nominal size as a trade convention. Ask which they use.
  • For rough hardwood, measure the board as it sits — rough lumber is sold close to its true rough dimensions, and width often varies along a live-edge board, so measure the narrow point to be safe.

The hardwood "quarter" system

Buy rough hardwood and you will meet thickness written as a fraction with a 4 on the bottom — 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 8/4. It is read as "four-quarter, five-quarter" and so on, and it simply counts quarter-inches of rough thickness before the board is surfaced.

Board feet are always calculated from the rough (nominal quarter) thickness — that is what you pay for, even though you lose a little to surfacing. So a 4/4 board is counted as one inch thick in the formula, a 6/4 board as 1.5 inches, and so on. Enter that rough thickness in the calculator and your count will match the yard's.

How to use the calculator

  1. Thickness and width in inches. Use actual dimensions for an honest volume; use the rough/nominal thickness for hardwood priced by the quarter.
  2. Length, in feet or inches. Toggle the unit to match how you measured. Most boards are easiest to enter in feet.
  3. Quantity. How many identical boards you need. The tool multiplies up the total.
  4. Price per board foot (optional). Type the yard's per-BF price and the calculator returns the estimated cost for the whole order.

Read the big number for total board feet, the per-board figure underneath, and the estimated cost in the stats row. The whole thing recalculates as you type.

Turning board feet into a real shopping list

Knowing the volume is step one. Buying the right amount is step two, and that means planning for waste.

A quick, reliable method for a furniture project:

  1. List every part with its finished thickness, width and length.
  2. Calculate board feet for each part, then add them up. The calculator handles each line; jot down the running total.
  3. Add your waste factor — 15% is a sensible default, more for fussy work.
  4. Round up to whole boards at the yard. You buy boards, not exact board feet, so always round in your favour.

For a rough order-of-magnitude check before you ever leave the workshop, estimate the project's overall volume, count it in board feet, and add a third on top. It is rough, but it stops you arriving at the yard with no idea whether you need 20 board feet or 80.

A worked example: pricing a small bookcase

Theory sticks better attached to a real project, so let us price the lumber for a modest bookcase. Say it needs two sides, three shelves and a top, all in 4/4 maple (counted as one inch thick), each piece roughly 10 inches wide. The sides are 4 feet long; the shelves and top are 3 feet long.

  • Two sides: (1 × 10 × 4) ÷ 12 = 3.33 BF each, so 6.67 BF for the pair.
  • Three shelves: (1 × 10 × 3) ÷ 12 = 2.5 BF each, so 7.5 BF for three.
  • One top: (1 × 10 × 3) ÷ 12 = 2.5 BF.

That is 16.67 board feet of finished parts. Real boards never come in those exact widths, though, so you cut your parts out of wider stock and lose the offcuts. Add a 20% waste margin — this is hardwood you are cutting to width — and you are shopping for about 20 board feet. At a maple price of, say, $6.50 per board foot, that is roughly $130 of lumber. What about plywood and sheet goods?

Board feet are a lumber unit, and they do not really apply to plywood, MDF or other sheet goods. Those are sold by the sheet — almost always a 4 × 8 foot panel — and priced per sheet by thickness. If you want to compare, a single 4 × 8 sheet has 32 square feet of face area, and you plan plywood projects by area and by how cleverly your parts nest into a sheet, not by volume.

The practical upshot: use this calculator for solid lumber (dimensional softwood and rough hardwood), and switch to a simple sheet count for plywood. Many projects mix the two — a cabinet might use plywood for the box and solid hardwood for the face frame and doors — so it is normal to estimate each material its own way and total the cost at the end.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate board feet by hand?

Multiply thickness × width × length, all in inches, then divide by 144. If the length is in feet, divide by 12 instead. Multiply by how many boards you have. That is the whole method — the calculator just does it instantly and totals the cost.

Is a board foot the same as a square foot?

No. A square foot measures area (length × width). A board foot measures volume (length × width × thickness) and equals 144 cubic inches. A thicker board contains more board feet for the same surface area.

Do I use nominal or actual dimensions?

For the true volume of wood — and to price softwood honestly — use the actual dressed size (a 2×4 is 1.5 × 3.5). For rough hardwood, use the rough dimensions, which is what the quarter system (4/4, 6/4) describes. Always ask the yard which size their price is based on.

How much extra lumber should I buy?

Add 10–15% for straightforward projects and 20–30% when you are dodging defects, matching grain, or cutting many small pieces. Then round up to whole boards.

Why is hardwood sold by the board foot but 2×4s aren't?

Rough hardwood comes in random widths and lengths, so a per-volume unit is the only fair way to price it. Dimensional softwood is milled to standard sizes, so yards can simply price it per piece or per linear foot.

These figures are excellent for planning and budgeting, but treat a quote you have checked yourself as the final word — width varies along rough boards, and yards differ on whether they price from nominal or actual sizes. Measure the real wood, add your waste margin, and round up, and you will never be caught short.
